The Narendra Modi led special panel will be picking the successor of Alok Verma. The removal of Alok Verma had created a controversy of its own. The controversy had led to what can be described as a “political storm”. The decision of Narendra Modi led special panel selecting the CBI chief came after Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Modi. In his letter to the Prime minister, Kharge has asked him to bring the documents related to the sacking of Alok Verma into the public domain.
The Narendra Modi led special panel will comprise of the Chief Justice of India as well as the leader of Opposition. The special panel is all set to meet on 24th of January. The Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogoi has not yet made it clear if he will be attending the meeting or not. The eminent judge had recused himself from the 10th of January meeting. It was in this meeting that the decision to sack Alok Verma was taken. Justice Gogoi had done this as he was a part of the bench that had reinstated the CBII chief.
Justice A K Sikri had acted as a replacement for Justice Gogoi. It was Justice Sikri whose deciding vote removed Verma within forty-eight hours of his reinstatement. This decision was taken the panel based on a report the anti-corruption watchdog Central Vigilance Commission. An officer from the committee had said, “(He) had not acted with the integrity expected of him”.
Alok Verma had reportedly said that he was “sad” that he had been transferred based on a report that was “false, unsubstantiated and frivolous allegations made only one person, who was inimical to him”. Alok Verma was supposed to retire at the end of this month. He, however, had quit after the day of his removal.
